“Gros·se, et puis?”

Gros·se, et puis? Connaître et combattre la grossophobie (transl. : Fat? So What? How to Understand
and Fight Fatphobia
) is the first book published by French Canadian author Edith Bernier.

It is viewed as an essential guide to help readers identify fatphobia, fight the stigmatization of fat people and consider their own perceptions.

Summary

Fatphobia is something that affects everyone. Our aversion and bias against fat people can provoke negative attitudes and hostile behaviour toward them. This is not only stigmatizing, but also discriminatory. Suffering microaggressions and feeling judged and excluded can obviously have detrimental effects on mental and physical health. In this book, the author sets out not to point the finger at people who behave in an offensive way, but rather to explain the facts and encourage readers to reflect on fatphobia and the ways in which they play into it. This practical guide is sure to become a valuable reference.

Excerpt

Fighting fatphobia is not about glorifying fat people. Especially not at the “expense” of
others. It’s about keeping things in proportion and making appropriate space – the space
fat bodies deserve. Ideally, this would involve reshaping the way we think about body image
to embrace a more varied, more realistic view. We need to bring our ideas of body image
back into the real world. We need to be more inclusive in how we think about real bodies,
bodies that are rarely, if ever, visible in the traditional fashion, media, and entertainment
spotlight.
